5 Signs It's Time to Replace Your Running Shoes

If you’re a runner, you know that good shoes aren’t optional.

The right pair will give you the support you need, protect your feet and make sure you stay pain free for your entire run. However, you shouldn’t be running in the same shoes year after year. Here are five signs it’s time to replace your running shoes.

  1. You’ve run many miles in them. Most running shoes last between 500 and 750 kilometres. If you’re approaching this distance, it’s probably time to invest in a new pair. This is especially true if you notice any of the other signs below.
  2. You’re experiencing pain. Running is a high impact sport. Your shoes do a lot to protect your body from the repetitive shocks caused by your feet pounding the pavement. If you’re starting to feel pain in your shins, ankles or knees of both legs, your shoes may not be absorbing the shocks as well as they used to.
  3. The treads are worn. Look at the underside of your shoes. If the tread is almost worn smooth, they’re no longer providing the shock absorption, support and stability they’re supposed to.
  4. You’re getting blisters. If your once comfortable shoes are giving you blisters, it’s because they’re warped out of shape and no longer fit your feet properly.
  5. The inside has become hard. When you press your thumb down on the midsole on the inside of the shoe, it should feel springy. If it’s hard, that means that it’s been compressed and no longer provides the comfort, shock absorption and support you need.

How to Extend the Life of Your Shoes

While all running shoes will eventually need to be replaced, there are ways to make them last as long as possible. Reserve your shoes for running only, make sure to untie them when you take them off instead of slipping your feet out of them and make sure they dry completely before wearing them again.
