Don’t Ignore Foot Pain
Ignoring pain can aggravate the condition, making it harder to heal and possibly more expensive to treat. If you are experiencing problems that don’t resolve themselves within a couple of weeks, you should get an evaluation from your podiatrist.
Cut Toenails Straight Across
Clipping into curved edges can cause ingrown toenails.
Avoid “Flimsy” Footwear
Flip-flops, UGGs® and other flimsy shoes should not be worn for long periods of time. Their flat soles leave arches limp and can cause painful tendon conditions such as plantar fasciitis.
Buy Shoes that are Right for Your Feet
Shoes made by different manufacturers will fit your feet differently – do not assume you are always the same shoe size. It is best to shop for shoes later in the day when your feet are a bit swollen. If a shoe is not comfortable right away, it never will be. Good shoes do not need a “break in” period.
Avoid Walking Barefoot
Walking barefoot can cause injury and infection to your feet.
Maintain Good Foot Hygiene
Washing in between the toes and drying them is important to prevent bacteria and infection.
Treat Foot Injuries with Ice
Foot injuries are usually accompanied by swelling. Use ice to help reduce pain and swelling; using heat will increase the swelling.
Hydrate Your Feet
Dry weather and open shoes can cause rapid loss of moisture from the skin and may result in cracking or the formation of fissures. Moisturize your feet with a lotion or cream on a regular basis.
